Evil Reflux Monster

Written Apr 29, 2012 8:11pm

Reflux for a baby as small as Ryland is nothing short of an evil monster.

The cardiologists say his heart is strong enough to let Superman go home, but it's this crazy, horrible reflux issue that's keeping him in the hospital at this point.

Poor baby threw up 3 or 4 times today already.  Every time he eats, the milk makes a return appearance within an hour or two.  Robin and Michael are trying every variation, change and suggestion they can find to help the little guy keep something down.

We've been told to wait this out, reflux is common and one of the most frustrating and difficult pieces of recovery.

He's just so tiny and pitiful.  It breaks your heart.

That being said, baby Superman is still an inspiration to us all each day.  His heart surgery and recovery is nothing short of a miracle, considering 18 days ago we almost lost him in the matter of minutes.

We know if he got through all of that, he will figure out a way to beat this feeding and reflux problem.

We have been so overwhelmed and blessed with your support and encouragement through this.  Many of you keep asking what you can do to help Michael, Robin and Ryland.  They have more than enough food, snacks, clothes and entertainment at the hospital with them now, and your prayers and concern are more than enough and simply wonderful.

So we would like to make a request that we hope will not only help Ryland, but will benefit the hundreds of other children who we've seen battle serious medical conditions at Duke.

For the month of May, any donations up to $100,000 made to Duke Children's Hospital will be matched by an anonymous donor.

So we simply ask you make a small donation in Ryland's honor, in hopes that future children will also benefit from the same excellent medical care he has received. http://www.dukechildrens.org/giving/overview

We see this as one "heart baby" paying it forward to future "heart babies."

Thank you.
