Ryland moved to his new room on the regular floor yesterday afternoon.
It is painted bright orange and slightly resembles a Dreamsicle.
It
is definitely different without 24-hour nurse supervision. Ryland
misses Nurse Amy and Nurse Emily from the PCICU. But to no surprise on
our part, they have already tracked him down for a visit.
Michael
will be staying with Robin and Ryland tonight for the first time. The
floor rooms have full bathrooms and a bed, so they are having a family
sleepover this evening. It's helpful to Robin to have someone around to
aide with feedings and of course numerous diaper/wardrobe changes.
Ryland
is still not eating as well as the docs and nurses would like, so they
hooked up his feeding tube again. He just seems to be too lazy and
sleepy to wake up long enough to eat.
They have started adding a
little formula to his milk in order to boost the number of calories he
is getting without having to increase the volume of milk. Calories will
help him grow stronger and healthier. Don't we all wish that "adding"
calories could be a part of our eating plans?
They also gave him the lowest dose of oxygen again last night, but the doctors say he should be find without it.
A
lactation specialist visited today and she seems to think our little
Superman, is also a self soother. He apparently sucks on his tongue,
which allows him to calm himself and sleep easily.
So while his
feeding issues need to be addressed, they still tell Robin and Michael
that he remains ahead of similar babies, who would most likely still be
intubated at this point.
We are still optimistic that Ryland
will be heading home sooner rather than later, but are not anxious to
rush him. When little man is ready to go home healthy, safely and
happily, we will be ecstatic.
As usual, I can't write an update
without mentioning just how wonderful the doctors and nurses are at
Duke. I'm not sure if other families feel the same way, but we truly
believe they are Angels on Earth.
Thanks to each of you who
have been following Ryland's journey and sending your thoughts, prayers
and words of encouragement. His little "will of steel" is only further
fortified through your support and desire to see his speedy recovery
continue.
